One of the few words from the Hebrew Scriptures that remains untranslated in English is alleluia, which means “praise the Lord.” Alleluia is a word that extols the God who came to be known in the deeds of creating, redeeming, and teaching the people. In the resurrection of Jesus, the alleluias and acclamations of the biblical tradition have a new meaning! Our alleluias express amazement and awe because of the abundant manifestations of God’s love and mercy in raising Jesus from the dead. In the risen Lord Jesus, God continues to redeem, gather, feed, and teach the people. Like the first disciples who experienced the risen Lord, we, too, hear his words spoken to us, share in the breaking of bread with him, and receive his gift of peace. Let us join the first believers in taking the good news of Jesus’ resurrection as a source of life, light, and joy for the world. The Lord Jesus is risen! Alleluia!
